What a day. It started with a part that had been machined by a local shop. They’ve been jacking us around lately and doing piss poor work. The last three jobs they’ve done have been shit and they’ve basically told us to piss off. First thing this morning I show up with both pieces of the part they had machined for us.
Them: Looks like you need a new one.
Me: This is on you.
Them: We can bill you to machine another one.
Me: The last three jobs you’ve done for us have been crap work.
Them: Looks like you need to find a new machine shop.
Me: That’s how it’s going to be?
Them: Yes.
Me: Sorry I wasted your time.

Then I go to the Ford dealer to talk to the salesman about how good they’ve done “fixing” my RS head gasket. He listens to the story, then tells me he needs to talk to the dealership GM, and will call me back ASAP. On my way back to work I get the call and he asks me to come back and talk to the GM. Their response. Yep, we screwed the pooch, good thing you’ve still got most of the warranty left. If you want you can buy an extended warranty too. YOU BENT MY FUCKING VALVES, I’M NOT PAYING FOR AN EXTENDED WARRANTY TO PROTECT MYSELF FROM YOUR INEPTITUDE. I’ll wait until tomorrow and hopefully will be cooled off before I call the salesman back.
Have an STi for your time.

I like giving my local machine shops money, I really do. But when these holier than thou types bitch about features I need, won’t give me real quotes, and otherwise just piss me off I’ve just started using www.protolabs.com and calling it a day. The parts are half the cost, take a third the time and I don’t even need to give them a drawing.

This is for work. When we have a machine down we sometimes need replacement parts machined ASAP, and we rarely have prints for anything. We’ve used this company for 10 years, and every time it’s been “get us this part machined ASAP, then send us a bill”. We’ve never jacked them around on payments, never bitched about a bill being too high. They’ve got capabilities for fab & machining that we don’t have in house, and we’re willing to pay for that. Lately they’ve been bitching about our jobs being a pain in the ass, bitching about taking the work, and bitching at us when they rush the jobs, turn something out half assed and then have to fix their mistakes.
We found another local shop that is set up for one off and short run stuff who seems like they’ll be good to deal with. When you’re in a shop and the guy gives you a quote but says try these other machine shops, they may be able to get it done quicker, that is a shop worth dealing with.

I use protolabs for work. They do a great job for 5 axis machined smallish parts.
If you have CAD files of the part they’ll turn it around in 1 day (plus shipping, but you can rush that too).
I’ve dealt with one offs for machined parts a lot for maintenance work, it’s a pain in the ass and most shops don’t want to deal with it. Which is why I love the online shops who specialize in that sort of thing. As long as you have CAD files - hopefully 3D.

Client: “those hings you sent don’t look anything like ours” (includes photo)
me: half of your parts are @ 0.040" out of spec
Client: well yours don’t match
me: yeah I made them to the proper spec on your drawing
Client; but i need these to match
me: yeah, you need to have a conversation with your supplier to stop sending you parts out of spec
client: can’t you just make yours to match his
me; and what am I supposed to do with the the half that are in spec?

Them: Looks like you need to find a new machine shop.
Me: That’s how it’s going to be?
Them: Yes.
It is super frustrating, but some companies apparently have enough easy business that they simply don’t care about a challenge, or finding new business either.
I’ve been trying all winter to find someone to perform cleaning/maintenance on my house boiler. The first place I made an appointment (a month in advance!) blew me off on the day they were scheduled (I took a half-day of vacation to be there for that one). I’ve contacted two other local outfits that can’t even be bothered to call me back. It seems no one wants my money. They must all have more business than they can handle.
